Dr. Jonathan F. Katz is a licensed psychologist and founding partner of High Performance Associates (HPA), a specialized team of performance coaches that help successful organizations excel. As an HPA partner, Dr. Katz has served as the performance coach for a variety of financial companies, businesses and professional sports organizations.
Dr. Katz was an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medical Psychology (in Psychiatry) at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University. He was also the Director of the Crisis Intervention Team, and the Assistant Director of the Adult Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He graduated summa cum laude from Connecticut College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Katz received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where he wrote his doctoral dissertation in the area of sports psychology. He completed his clinical internship at New York University-Bellevue Medical Center.
In the financial world Dr. Katz has worked as the in-house performance psychologist for a wide variety of institutions. These have included one of the largest privately held options trading firms in the US, as well as a major proprietary trading firm based in Texas. He has also worked at several prominent New York and Connecticut based hedge funds, which have included multi-strategy and long/short investment approaches with assets under management ranging from $600 million to $8 billion. Dr. Katz has also worked for a $21 billion global asset management firm employing a classic value approach, as well as at a global credit management firm with $10 billion under management opportunistically investing in the global credit markets.
As a sports psychologist, Dr. Katz has worked for the New York Rangers. He was also the Director of Sport/Exercise Psychology at Altheus, an advanced health and performance center in Rye, NY. Dr Katz has consulted with a wide range of amateur, collegiate and professional athletes. He has worked with NBA and NHL players, major league baseball teams, top ranked professional tennis players, and a variety of NCAA athletes and athletic programs. Dr. Katz is currently the sports psychologist for the University of Texas men's and women's tennis teams.
Dr. Katz has been interviewed on local and national news and talk shows, and his expert commentaries have been widely heard on “all-sports” radio stations across the country. He can currently be heard on “Shrink Rap” every Wednesday afternoon on ESPN radio, 104.9 The Horn, in Austin, TX.
Dr. Katz is an avid ultramarathon runner. He has finished in the top 10 in his last four ultra races which have included a 50 miler, a 50k (31 miles), and two 6 hour races. Dr. Katz also had a 1st place finish in his age group at his most recent 26.2 mile marathon. Dr. Katz works in Westchester County, New York, New York City, and Austin, Texas.
